How to slow the neck of my T-shirts from fraying?

I always end up after a year having my t-shirts necks start to fall apart and rip. I taught my self how to do the laundry since I lost my parents so maybe I just been doing things wrong? I hand my stuff on hangers and never fold and put my shirts away in drawers. Maybe that too could be the problem? Or maybe after a year shirts are suppose to fall apart? lol They range from Khols to Eddie Bauer brand type clothes and all do it eventually.
